Bees Saal Baad: Return to Pilani

Connaught

Turn around from facing ShivGanga and you are looking at Connaught, the tiny shopping center whose only resemblance to its eponymous Delhi cousin is the arch-lined corridor in front of the shops.

You saw the cars. Fortunately, there appear to be only a few. I can envision a nightmarish future in which cars tromp through, angrily honking and fighting for parking space. But that day, thank heavens, isn't upon us yet.

What you also noticed were the profusion of billboards, many sponsored by the competing cellphone services. Indeed, the names of those stalwart stores, Blue Moon and Volga, are hard to find amongst the clutter.

Blue Moon still does milkshakes, still said to be the world's best, and is run by the two sons of the owner. There are now many new restaurants (not pictured) here.

"Moda's" are gone, replaced with tacky but weather-proof plastic chairs.

Kapoorji is now more or less retired. He's found a job for each of his three sons, he says, so he's happy.
