Mac: Instructions for installing Java
Windows users: You will be using the Unix-RDP, which already
has Java installed so these instructions do not apply to you.
Mac users: Some versions of Mac OS already have Java
installed, but some don't. We don't know why. Nonetheless,
here are instructions to get Java installed.
- First, to see whether it's installed, type
javac
in the Terminal and hit "return" (enter):
- If Java is installed, you will see a bunch of incomprehensible
text scroll by real fast, ending with something like:
- If not, then you need to install Java.
- Start by searching "install jdk" in a new browser tab:
- Follow the link to the Oracle webpage that looks something like:
- Click on downloading the JDK (Java Development Kit),
then find the Mac OS-X download in the list:
- When you click that (the file typically ends in
.dmg) you will go through
a license-agreement step:
- At this step, Oracle may ask you to create an account. If you go
through those steps, you'll finally get to download the DMG file
(which takes a few minutes).
- Then, you open the DMG file and click on the Mac's package symbol
and go through a standard install that looks like this:
- Don't worry about which version number (like 16.0.2 above).
Any Java version from years ago like 8.0 and above will do.
- After it's all done, come back to Step 5 where you
typed javac HelloWorld.java
in the Terminal and proceed from there.
