Message from Dean David Dolling

In my message last month, I highlighted our then-upcoming Engineers’ Week celebration. Engineers’ Week 2009 has since come and gone, and it was quite a success. It is an almost exclusively student-run activity, and I wish you could have seen the work that our students put into it this year. I was proud of all their efforts and of the results.

The 30+ events that they organized—everything from speakers and educational displays to contests, competitions, and games—made for a wonderful combination of fun and learning experiences. The Engineers Ball on Friday evening at the Mellon Auditorium was also a terrific success. The smiling faces, the laughter, the overall noise level, the endless flashing of cameras, and the numbers who stayed around to the very end make me think our guests all had a great time. The photos tell the story better than I can: please take a moment to enjoy the Engineers' Week photos and the Engineers' Ball photos.

We designated Engineers' Week, and particularly the Engineers' Ball, as the kick-off for our year-long 125th anniversary celebration. If you missed it, don’t worry; we’ll have other events throughout the year to mark our 125th anniversary, and I’ll continue to let you know about them in my Colonial Cable messages.

I look forward to seeing many of you at our upcoming events.

A message from Development . . .

Jo Boukhira

I am very pleased to report that Josephine “Jo” Boukhira joined the Development Office earlier this week as associate director of development for SEAS. Jo comes to SEAS from George Mason University, where she served as associate director of alumni relations and development for the Volgenau School of Information Technology and Engineering. Previously, Jo was an embassy liaison at the Office of Science and Technology at the French Embassy in Washington, DC, and at the United States Embassy in Morocco. She is a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University. Jo very much looks forward to getting to know SEAS alumni and working to build support for this great school!

Prof. Barbera Receives Veterans Health Administration Research Grant

Professor Joseph Barbera, associate professor in the Department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering and co-director of the Institute for Crisis, Disaster and Risk Management, is the principal investigator for a recently-awarded $343,000 sponsored research project to support the professional development of Veterans Health Administration (VHA) personnel in the area of health care emergency management. This is the third related sponsored research project for the VHA under Professor Barbera's leadership; the projects total more than $1.5 million over the past four years.

 


 

GW IBE Announces Winners of the Interdisciplinary Research Fund Competition

The GW Institute for Biomedical Engineering (GW IBE) is pleased to announce the winners of the 2009 GW IBE Interdisciplinary Research Fund Competition. They are:

SEAS Professors of the Year

Each year as part of Engineers’ Week activities, SEAS students have the opportunity to recognize faculty whom they regard as outstanding teachers by voting for the Professor of the Year in each of the five SEAS departments. Engineers’ Council sponsors the awards and announces the winners at the Engineers’ Ball. The winners of the 2009 Professor of the Year awards are: Professors Sameh Badie (Civil and Environmental Engineering), Abdou Youssef (Computer Science), Shahrokh Ahmadi (Electrical and Computer Engineering), Lile Murphree (Engineering Management and Systems Engineering), and Ryan Vallance (Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering).

 


 

Call for Participation: Research Study in Natural Language Programming (GW IRB #110738):

Did you ever wish you could just tell your computer what to do? If so, you are invited to participate in a computer science research study focused on the effectiveness of using natural language to write software. No programming experience is required. Participants will implement sample programs using a natural language programming toolset based on pattern recognition in English.

Pizza and light refreshments will be served prior and there will be drawings for free Best Buy gift cards! The study takes place on the Virginia Campus, Research 1, Room 129, 20101 Academic Way, Ashburn, VA. Choose one of three sessions: March 11th, 16th, or 19th. Dinner is at 5:00 pm and the user study is from 5:30-7:00 pm. The study is being conducted by Prof. Matthew Burke (CS) and Darren Broemmer.
