Presentation Tips: Technical presentations
We will consider research colloquia
and conference talks (as opposed to, say, presenting
to venture capitalists):
- Typical time for a colloq is 45-50 minutes.
Short conference talks can last anywhere from 15-30 minutes.
- The audience is usually technical, but not necessarily in your area of
specialization.
- In these talks you must:
- explain the problem clearly;
- explain your contribution, and how it differs from past work;
- explain the impact of your contribution;
- Explain the problem using a pictorial example; avoid
excessive mathematical notation.
- Cite key relevant papers (past work) on a single slide and
use a different color to summarize how your work differs from past work.
- If your work and your audience is theoretically-inclined,
provide a proof sketch for the most important result.
