Role of Policy, Ethics, and Law in e-Commerce

Speakers:

Edwin L. Behrens, former Director-National Government Relations for Procter & Gamble(retired), is a Senior Advisor to The Progress & Freedom Foundation, coordinating its research and educational activities regarding on-line privacy and the regulation of personal information. He joined P&G in Cincinnati and transferred to Washington, DC, in1976 to represent the Company's interests at the policy-making levels of the federal government. Most recently, he chaired the BBBOnLine Steering Committee that oversaw that organization's successful development of an industry-based "self-regulatory" approach to online privacy for consumers. In 1999, the World Federation of Advertisers(WFA) invited Mr. Behrens to discuss online privacy policies before the WFA's 46th World Congress in Seoul, Korea.

Dianne Martin, is a Professor in the Computer Science Department at the George Washington University. She has a BA from Western Maryland College, an MS from the University of Maryland, and an EdD from George Washington University. She has thirty years of experience in the computer field, including three years in industry with IBM as a programmer on the Apollo space project, and 25 years of teaching at the university level. She is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Chair of the ACM Special Interest Group in Computers and Society (SIGCAS). Dr. Martin was the Chairman of the Board of the Recreational Software Advisory Council (RSAC), a non-profit organization that provides content labels on computer games and internet web pages for to help parents and teachers make informed decisions about media appropriate for children. She currently serves as the Director of the Cyberspace Policy Institute at George Washington University and the Chief Policy Officer for GeoTrust, an internet-based company developing the trust infrastructure for online marketplaces.
