Early 1980s
This mapping program was developed in the early 1980s (I can't recall the precise date, but it was probably sometime in 1980). It illustrates some of the principles of color use in a particular form of map called a choropleth from the greek words for region and many. It is based on my paper "Continuous Color Choropleth Maps" which was published in the short lived journal: Geo-Processing: Geo-Data, Geo-Systems, and Digital Mapping, in November 1980. It's not the earliest example of an animated map, but it represented a major advance in usability.
