"From Lab to IPO" Lecture Series

Whether planning a start-up or just being a strategic employee who receives stock options, this lecture series deals with what you need to know to succeed. It discusses the practical and legal issues that you will deal with every day in taking a great idea from the lab and creating a successful hi-tech or biotech company. Attendees are provided with lectures and readings to enable them to identify the major issues in organizing a business venture around intellectual property, including employment agreements, stock options, angel and venture capital, IPOs and tech transfer from university/government labs. This lecture series is appropriate for attendees who have started a new company, intend to start one, or are in a senior management position, such as CIO, CTO, CEO or strategic employee with stock options.

EAA Achievement Award: Call for Nominations

The EAA Achievement Award is offered annually to SEAS alumni who have achieved outstanding success in their chosen field of endeavor. The award is presented in May at the SEAS commencement ceremony, which will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2006 at 7:30 pm, and allows for recognition of outstanding alumni before the assembly of faculty, graduates, and the families of the graduates.

The EAA is requesting nominations from SEAS alumni, faculty, and university staff, as well as friends or relatives of the nominee. Please click here to download the eligibility criteria and instructions for the Engineer Alumni Achievement Award, including the nomination form.

A nominee should have an earned degree from SEAS and not be a member of the faculty or administration of GW. Posthumous awards are not considered.

Please include education and career details, organizational affiliations, vocational information, awards and publications, and any media reporting concerning the nominee. Typed submissions of no more than ten (10) pages including accompanying supporting material are appreciated.

The deadline for nominations has been extended to January 24, 2006, and may be sent by postal mail to:

Engineer Alumni Association to Participate in Regional Science Fairs
Looking for Alumni to Volunteer as Science Fair Judges

The George Washington University Engineer Alumni Association (EAA) is looking for School of Engineering and Applied Science alumni to volunteer as judges for science fairs in the Washington, D.C. region.

The purpose of EAA involvement in local science fairs is to encourage youth to consider the science and engineering professions, increase awareness of opportunities in these fields, and to promote GW and SEAS.

All science fair winners and their parents will be invited to a Dean's reception to be held in April at the Foggy Bottom Campus. Students and parents will have the opportunity to visit SEAS and meet Dean Timothy Tong, members of the faculty, current students, and alumni.

The EAA will participate in the following regional science fairs:

  • Montgomery County - March 11, 2006
  • Northern Virginia Science and Engineering Fair (Alexandria, Arlington, Falls Church) -    March 11, 2006
  • District of Columbia - March 18, 2006
  • Fairfax County - March 18, 2006

    SEAS Alumni Reception at the Transportation Research Board 85th Annual Meeting

    The SEAS Civil and Environmental Engineering Department and the SEAS Office of Advancement and Alumni Programs cordially invite all SEAS alumni to a reception to be hosted during the National Academies Transportation Research Board (TRB) 85th Annual Meeting. Jim E. Hall, partner at Hall & Associates, LLC, will be the guest speaker for the evening.

    Hall is the former Chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) serving in that position from 1994 to 2001. During his tenure, Hall presided over the Board of Inquiry and public hearings for several major transportation accidents, including USAir Flight 427 and TWA Flight 800. He also participated in numerous international aviation investigations including those in Indonesia, Japan, China and Brazil. Hall's focus on safety led the NTSB to issue landmark safety guidelines for passenger side automobile bags, transit bus safety, child restraint systems, and commuter airlines.

    Hall was named to the White House Commission on Aviation Safety and Security in 1996, after which the commission made over 51 recommendations to the President for improvements in aviation safety and security around the world. Today, Hall serves as an advisor to governments and private clients on transportation safety and security, crisis management and government relations. Hall is also Chairman of The George Washington University's Aviation Institute Advisory Board.

    The TRB 85th Annual Meeting program will cover all transportation modes, with more than 2,500 presentations in 500 sessions addressing topics of interest to all attendees: policy makers, administrators, practitioners, researchers, and representatives of government, industry, and academic institutions. The 2006 meetings spotlight theme is "Transportation 2025: Getting There from Here." Also highlighted will be "The Interstate Highway Systems 50th Anniversary - What Have We Learned?" TRB will attract approximately 9,000 transportation professionals from around the world to Washington, D.C., January 22-26, 2006.     American Society of Engineering Management Meeting: SEAS Professor Howard Eisner to Speak

    SEAS alumni interested in engineering management are cordially invited to participate in the local section of the American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM). The National Capital Section (NCS) will be holding its next monthly luncheon meeting Friday, January 27. A luncheon from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. will be followed by a speaker from 1:00-2:00 p.m., at the GW Club, 1918 F Street, N.W.

    The featured speaker on January 27 will be Howard Eisner, D.Sc., Distinguished Research Professor and Professor of Engineering Management in GW's Department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering. He will speak on the topic "Engineering Management Outside the Box". Dr. Eisner joined SEAS in 1989 after thirty years as an executive and research engineer with ORI, Inc. and the Atlantic Research Corporation (ARC). Dr. Eisner has been active in developing computer-aided systems and software engineering. His book Computer-Aided Systems Engineering (Prentice-Hall, 1988) was the first in this field. His more recent book Essentials of Project and Systems Engineering Management (John Wiley, 2nd Edition 2002) integrates the topics of project management and systems engineering.

    GW vs. Dayton Men's Basketball Tailgate - Hosted by the Engineer Alumni Association

    The EAA will host a pre-game tailgate for SEAS alumni before the 19th-ranked GW Colonials take on the Dayton Flyers on February 8, 2006. The tailgate will feature food and beverages and will take place from 6:00 - 7:15 pm in the Dean's Conference Room in Tompkins Hall, just a short distance from the Charles E. Smith Center. Tip-off is at 7:30 pm.

    The cost of a game ticket and entrance to the tailgate is $10, payable when you arrive at the tailgate. Cash or checks (payable to The George Washington University) will be accepted. If you already have game tickets, the cost of the tailgate is only $5. Only a limited number of game tickets are available, so reserve your tickets soon!
