Lecture 1: Welcome to the course

Welcome to CS11111

Let’s take care of a few administrative/social tasks before we dive into the material :-)

  1. [15 min] Go over the syllabus together

  2. [3 min] We will use Ed as our main communication hub. Please join Ed (link in email from Dr Kinga) if you haven’t already.

  3. [10 min] Please fill out the Day 1 survey on Ed now. This will be your first participation credit.

  4. [5 min] Introduce yourself to at least two people sitting near you. If you feel comfortable, share whether or not this is your first coding class (and/or share if this is your first time in this building and what you think about the lecture hall), and exchange contact information.

  5. [5 min] Let’s take a look at the survey results!

  6. [10 min] Let’s review some tips for doing well in this class.

Assessing your background for this course [15 min]

There are no prerequisites for this class! However, to get a sense of your background (i.e. what you learned in high school), please complete the on-paper assessment we will pass out. Getting the correct answer on this is worth a 0.25% grade boost at the end of the semester; a good-faith attempt to get the correct answer is worth a 0.20% grade boost at the end of the semester.

When you have finished your assessment, turn it in at the front of the room (before 12:25pm at the latest).

Next class

We’ll discuss the basic parts of a Java program.

Prep for next time
