The first version of these notes was hand-written in 1973 on five-color spirit ditto masters for a special NSF College Teachers Summer Program at Oklahoma State University. Since most of you have probably never heard of this copying technology which your grandparents' teachers used back in elementary school, I am including for your general education inj the history of technology a picture of the type of hardware typically used to duplicate the first hundred page version of my notes. The beauty of using ditto masters was that the ink was transferred from the original to the copies. As a result, you needed to rewrite the masters from which the copies were made after every batch of fifty or so copies so you often used that as an opportunity to edit and re-think the contents!
