''Barangay'' Water Project
Friday, August 1, 2014
''The Barangay Water Project is an ongoing research collaboration among the University of Waterloo (Canada), George Washington University (USA), and De La Salle University (Philippines). It aims to improve access to safe water and reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases in rural areas of the Philippines through the development of the malunggay biofilter. The Project is funded by the Government of Canada through the Grand Challenges Canada / Stars in Global Health Program.
The Barangay Water Project integrates scientific, social, and business innovation. Its main objectives are coupled to health goals through the implementation of water interventions that lead to improvements in public health. The project also leverages existing legislative support for malunggay (Moringa oleifera), which was recently proclaimed as the national vegetable of the Philippines (House Bill 2072, 2014). It promotes a plant that is highly valued for its nutritional and medicinal uses. Over the long term, through the enhanced cultivation of the malunggay tree for commercial use, the project can help boost nutrition, food security, and livelihood.''

Prof. Joost Santos (EMSE) won a sub-contract from the University of Waterloo (PI: Dr. Sheree Ann Pagsuyoin). We seek to study the feasibility of developing a water biofiltration system using Moringa Oleifera. This project is funded by Grand Challenges Canada, a highly competitive funding source that supports ''bold ideas with big impact.''
