Biography

Charles Gilmore has been on the faculty of SEAS since 1971 teaching courses in materials science and engineering and achieving the rank of professor in 1981. From 1981 to 1985 he was the chairman of the Civil Mechanical and Environmental Engineering(CMEE) Department, in 1989 he was named the co-director of the Institute for Materials Science at GW, in 1991 and 92 he was the Acting Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science(SEAS), and from 1994 to 1997 he was the Associate Dean for Research in SEAS.
Professor Gilmore is the lead faculty member in SEAS in the area of Materials Science and Engineering and is the co-director of the Institute for Materials Science(IMS). The IMS is an interdisciplinary institute with faculty from CMEE, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Chemistry, Physics and Geology. The IMS fosters research between faculty at GW and the development of university experimental facilities for research.
