Research Security Analyst

General Description: The Research Software Engineer is responsible for researching and understanding complex or difficult problems associated with implementing security solutions and infrastructures required to thwart attacks that will occur in the near future. Responsibilities will include understanding of key computer science/security techniques and concepts in use today.

General Description: The Research Security Analyst is responsible for researching and understanding what security problems and solutions will be required in the future. In support of this function, the Analyst will address complex or difficult problems associated with implementing security solutions and infrastructures required to thwart attacks that will occur in the mid to long term period.

Main Duties/Responsibilities: Actively research and understand technologies and products in place in the security infrastructure today. Build an understanding of what advanced techniques would be required to bridge the gap in limitations existing in today’s technologies relating to malicious code, network intrusion detection and enterprise security management. Implement prototypes of new techniques and write reports on research and findings. Work with Research Scientists and Investigators to support capabilities required for their research. Provide mentoring and assistance to Product Delivery and Operations groups who would benefit from the research.

Main Duties/Responsibilities: Actively research and understand products and data produced by security products in place in the security infrastructure today. Understand their limitations and the type of solutions that would be required to bridge the gap in limitations in future solutions. Write reports on research and findings. Work with Research Scientists and Investigators to support data requirements and product capabilities required for their research. Provide mentoring and problem resolution assistance to Product Delivery and Operations groups who would benefit from the research.

Leadership/Supervision: Supervising is not normal responsibility of this position. Team work and collaborations skills a must.

Professional Skills/Experience: Advanced knowledge of Windows and UNIX operating system platforms, architecture and internals; knowledge of routers, network protocols a plus. Good oral and written skills, effective team work skills. Three years or more experience with writing software in C, C++ and Java required.

Other: Travel to support presentation and implementation of the research will be periodically required.

Symantec is currently accepting applications for the position of Manager of Trending and Analysis. The position offers the unique opportunity to manage the research, writing, and production of Symantec’s semi-annual Internet Security Threat Report. Over the past two years, this report has been recognized as the leading source of intelligence concerning past, current, and emerging cyber threats affecting the Internet community. We are seeking candidates that are qualified to build on this foundation of excellence, and further enhance the quality, scope, and depth of future reports.

Responsibilities of this position include:

  1. Conduct continual research and analysis to identify emerging Internet threats
  2. Establish research agendas that reveal meaningful insights to Symantec clients, members of the information security community, and the general public
  3. Manage the creation, writing, editing, and production of the Report
  4. Educate internal Symantec employees regarding current and emerging threat trends
  5. Interact with members of the media and IT analyst community to explain major Report findings and emerging trends
  6. Assist in shaping new Symantec initiatives and products that leverage threat intelligence data and expertise

The ideal candidate will possess:

  1. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  2. Outstanding record of academic achievement
  3. Proven success in project management (preferably in a position responsible for producing an intellectual product)
  4. Strong academic and professional background in statistical analysis
  5. Familiarity and comfort with information security concepts and trends
  6. Proven ability to lead and execute plans in a matrix management structure
  7. Demonstrated ambition and enthusiasm to continually exceed internal and external expectations regarding the scope and quality of Symantec’s intelligence capabilities
