Mike Duffey is an Associate Professor in the Department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering.

He is interested in how physical engineering systems are economically designed, built, and operated. This includes researching new methods and applications for life cycle cost analysis, and related design and management processes. He teaches courses in what is traditionally called "engineering economics" (EMSE 260, EMSE 261), and systems engineering (such as EMSE 283). He is also interested in new ways to attract young people to engineering, and related curriculum development.

His education includes a doctorate in Mechanical Engineering (1992) and masters degree in Manufacturing Engineering (1987), both from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He has a BA in History (Trinity College, Hartford, CT) and a BS in Physics (UMass Amherst).

Prior to coming to GWU in 1992, Duffey's experiences included developing design software for U.S. manufacturers; managing a design software research lab; working as a merchant seaman on U.S.-flagged container ships; and as a journalist in New York City. At GWU, he has worked on research projects funded by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, NASA, and other industry and government entities. Besides his on-campus teaching, he has taught extensively in the department's off-campus masters program, traveling to classrooms at industry and government worksites across the country. He has also worked on several projects with civic groups in the District of Columbia helping to promote technical literacy for the city's youth. He also enjoys tinkering with pedal steel guitars, and playing traditional country music.
